If you come to Cadiz, and don’t walk through the Barrio de la Viña, it’s like not coming to one of our favorite cities. Colourful and lively, it is the venue for the world-famous Cadiz Carnival.
Cadiz is worth visiting any time of the year, although if you have the opportunity, we recommend you visit it during the carnival, when the neighborhood is dressed in its essence.
Do you want to know more about Barrio de la Viña? Today at Oway we take you on a tour of the heart of Cadiz. Don’t miss it.
This is one of the city’s historic neighborhoods, bounded by the streets of La Rosa and Sagasta. Its name comes from the use it had in the past: it was the area where the vine was grown until the 18th century, when the high population growth forced the expansion of the residential areas.
-Because of its proximity to the sea, this neighborhood was populated by the fishermen of the area, which gives it a special charm
If you are thinking of visiting Cadiz, we recommend you get lost among its streets to breathe the sea breeze, typical of Cadiz, and feel the heat of the sun on your skin, taking into account these more than obligatory stops:
But these are not the only obligatory stops: the people of Cadiz, their warmth and sense of humor is one of the neighborhood’s best attractions.
Not forgetting its narrow streets that always lead to unexpected corners and moments… or the opportunity to stop at a terrace, have a beer in the sun and of course: a good “pescaíto” (fried fish). The true local pride.
Cadiz, or Cai for the locals, is synonymous with colorful joy and a great sense of humor. The carnivals of Cadiz are the most famous and important in Spain: they represent the living essence of Carnival: joy and celebration… something that Cadiz people know well.
The big festival of the city of light will be held from 20 February to 1 March next year. And like all great festivals, it is best to prepare in advance to mark this day on the calendar and set off for a real celebration
Carnaval bendito, Carnaval Maldito. Carnaval te odio y te necesito’ (Blessed Carnival, Cursed Carnival. Carnival, I hate you and I need you).
Los Cobardes, Antonio Martínez Ares
