How to get there
It can be accessed from Malaga via the Autovía del Sol, entering through Fuengirola and taking the A-387 towards Mijas. There is a municipal car park which costs only €1 per day. Another option is to go by bus, with the lines that are offered from Fuengirola, Malaga and Torremolinos.
To get to La Cala de Mijas, you can take the 220 or 320 bus lines from Marbella or the 119 and 224 from Calahonda. Other options are by plane to Malaga Airport and by train to the Renfe train station.
Playa Calahonda
It is located between the Port of Cabopino and the beach of El Bombo. It is a fairly quiet beach despite being surrounded by houses and many establishments, as it has a lot of vegetation. It has a great wealth of seabed, therefore, we can enjoy an experience diving in the sea or fishing.
Playa de La Luna
It is a smaller beach, but it is one of the best, as due to its size it is usually very quiet. It is accessed through a small tunnel, something that can be a bit complex if you are not from the area or do not know the place, hence it is almost always quiet. Another option is to walk from Cabopino beach.
Playa de Algaida
It is very similar to Playa de la Luna due to its tranquillity and small size, with very fine sand and crystal clear water. Swimming in these waters is almost a privilege.
La Cala
It has the seal of quality with the “Blue Flag”, which indicates the quality of the place for bathing. It is much larger than the previous ones and has moderate waves. Its sand is quite dark in colour and has some rocky areas.
It is the one with the most active nightlife, especially at weekends, where you can enjoy dinner or a few drinks in the sea breeze. Nearby is the Watchtowers museum, for some historical sightseeing in the area.
Playa de El Bombo
It is located next to the Port of Cabopino. Like the previous one, it has quite moderate waves and dark sand. In this beach you can also do a lot of scuba diving and snorkelling, due to its crystal clear waters.
Playa El Chaparral
It is one of the best known beaches in Mijas due to its great amplitude. It has the “Q” seal of tourist quality. In 2010, part of this island was considered a nudist area. You can enjoy some water sports such as windsurfing, sailing or scuba diving.
Apart from enjoying these marvellous beaches, you can’t miss the historic quarter, with its white houses reminiscent of its Arab origins and the views that are offered if you take a hiking route towards the mountains. Its main monuments are the Gardens and the Mirador de la Muralla, which is a must if you visit it.
Where to eat
A recommendation of some of the best restaurants to eat in Mijas:
- Restaurant La Alcazaba: is located in the centre of Mijas and has fantastic views of the sea and the coast. It has international food as it is aimed at tourists, although its menu is not very extensive, enjoying a good meal with these views is well worth it.
- Marisquería y freiduría Villalba: an ideal place to eat well and cheaply, a large portion is priced at 7 euros, and you can enjoy great quality seafood.
- Enrique`s Restaurants Pizza: has an excellent Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. The pizzas are cooked in a wood-fired oven and the meat is grilled. On Sundays you can enjoy their free buffet of Italian and Moroccan food.
To finish off your walk through Mijas you can enjoy an ice cream from Mayan Monkey, where they have the best ice creams and you can create your own chocolate bar.
Where to park
There are several free car parks around the town, such as in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña or in front of the Museum of Miniatures. If you want the option of public paid parking it is located just below the Virgen de la Peña viewpoint, it is covered and only costs 1 euro per day.
