Seville Cathedral is one of the most important landmarks you can discover during your visit to the city. It is the largest building of all Gothic architecture and one of the most important in Christianity. Its exceptional history will lead you to discover how the Bell Tower, known as the Giralda because of its weathervane-shaped top, was actually a tower that called to prayer in the city’s ancient Great Mosque. The latter is one of the most imposing reflections of the Islamic mark on the city, where you will climb to a height of 104 metres. You will also discover the plaster decoration that decorates the beautiful windows of the first body of the tower, which can be found in other monuments in the city. Within the Cathedral grounds there is a courtyard that belonged to the old mosque. Here you can enjoy the water and the scent of orange blossom that in spring blooms from its beautiful orange trees. A paradisiacal place that will make you enjoy the Islamic splendour. The Cathedral occupies the base of what was once the Great Mosque. On top of this, a great mass has developed in size and height which was the response to the Christian Reconquest and the historical transcendence of the city.
The great local, national and international artists saw in this monument the opportunity to work on the works of art that were commissioned. These great masters have given Seville Cathedral a rich treasure that covers all artistic manifestations, from weaving to stained glass, including painting, sculpture, altarpieces, reliefs, clockwork, gold and silver work, and a long etcetera. The importance of the Cathedral is reflected in the very important bone remains preserved for the history of Spain and the world, such as those of the conquering King Ferdinand III, known as ‘The Saint’, or those of Christopher Columbus. The grandeur of Seville Cathedral breaks the landscape of Seville and the world, as it was recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
One of the main must-see stops in the city of Seville is its Cathedral and Giralda. From the highest point of the historic centre of the city you can enjoy a unique landscape that since the sixteenth century have been glimpsed by those in charge of ringing the bells that resounded at times of mass, festivities or funerals. With the OWAY Tours route you will be able to access both the Cathedral and the Giralda without wasting time at the ticket office. What’s more, you’ll have a specialised guide to take you around every corner of the monument through its history, heritage and legends.

John
Our guide was absolutely brilliant. He had great historical knowledge of the past. He was entertaining and could answer all the questions asked of him. The cathedral was gorgeous, with some amazing architecture and art work. I particular liked the 700 pipe organ. The tower, Giralda, is something everyone should do at least once. Overall I had a wonderful experience.
