Description

The palatine city of the caliphate, a must see.

Beyond the legend of the romantic caprice of a caliph in love with his favourite concubine, Medina al-Zahra has a dazzling historical reality of which we want you to be a part. At the foot of the Sierra de Córdoba, very close to the old city, it was a political centre that was to become the cultural forge of a new world.   The cultural impact and material value make Madinat al-Zahra a unique example of Islam. It was conceived as a grandiose project with a clear political component, the dignifying of the caliphate and for the ambassadors of the various European kingdoms. A tradition that you can travel through its archaeological remains and a magnificent recreation of the greatness that was the site. Power is displayed and shown, and that must have been very clear to Abd-al Rahman III. An integrated urban complex that includes the Royal Alcazar in the highest area and in several terraces are expanded dependencies, lounges, patios and gardens, kitchens, military equipment, houses, etc. A whole extensive complex that housed more than 20,000 people in a short period of time. The renewed image of the strong and powerful caliphate that had built the new palatial city did not last more than 70 years. Art, the written word, and knowledge are some of the signs you can appreciate of the short-lived city, which ended with the end of the Omayyad Caliphate. Abandoned and despoiled, it has remained unaltered. In recent years, a great deal of restoration work has been carried out which has allowed us to see its rich heritage and its influence on art and thought.

Medina Azahara was declared an Object of Cultural Interest in the category of monument since 1923 and in 2018 World Heritage by UNESCO. A very solid candidacy that is the bridge between the Eastern and European worlds. The perfect complement to the visit of the Mosque of Cordoba to understand is the splendor of the city of Cordoba in the tenth century.

Medina Azahara Entrance Tickets:

With your entrance you will be able to access an enclave where time has stopped and has kept intact an oriental legacy that came to Cordoba to show the world the cultural importance of the Muslim caliphs. Their legacy will be shown to you in two places, the Interpretation Centre and the Archaeological Site, which you will be able to access with your visit. The ticket includes a bus shuttle that connects both sites, accompanied throughout the tour by a specialized guide who will introduce you to the history and legends surrounding the archaeological site. Remember that non-residents of the European Union will have to pay the amount of 1.5 euros at the monument's ticket office.

Medina Azahara: Guided tours schedules

Adapting to your visit we have incorporated a route in spanish through the archaeological complex depending on availability, from Tuesday to Sunday at 10.00 or 11.00 am at the Glorieta de la Cruz Roja (if you travel by bus from Cordoba included) or at 10.20 or 11.20 am at the shuttle bus stop next to the Medina Interpretation Centre (if you travel by private car). This time of day will allow you to visit a space where there are not too many shadows, so your visit will be much more welcoming first thing in the morning. In addition, we especially recommend a visit to the site at night during the summer season. A unique tour that will allow you to enjoy a unique space in the moonlight.
