Description

The Picasso Museum in Malaga was inaugurated on 27 October 2003 by Their Majesties King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia, but it could have been inaugurated 50 years earlier if the different authorities of the time had accepted the donation of more than 200 paintings that the famous painter wanted to make. The Palace of the Counts of Buenavista now houses the Picasso Museum in Malaga. This palace was ordered to be built in 1530 by Diego de Cazalla. Of Renaissance architecture and with a traditional Malaga layout, it is a two-storey building built around a porticoed courtyard. Moreover, this is not the first museum it has housed, as in the 1950s it housed the Museum of Fine Arts. This Renaissance palace is located in Calle San Agustín, in the heart of the historic quarter, and was declared a National Heritage Site in 1939.

The tour of this museum and the layout of its rooms are not random. It is both a thematic and chronological tour that shows us that Picasso never stopped innovating in his art. The visit begins in the Renaissance courtyard where we will explain the origin of this museum. We will then go inside the palace to begin the visit of the rooms. During the visit we will be able to observe with our own eyes the transition of Picasso’s art, from cubism to surrealism. The visit ends on the upper floor with works from 1970 to 1972, just one year before his death. We will get to know more personal aspects of the artist’s life, but the most important thing is that we will be able to enjoy such impressive works as: “Woman with raised arms”, “Jacqueline seated”, “Musketeer with sword” or “The three Graces”. The museum’s exhibition includes a total of 120 works by the painter from Malaga, dated between 1894 and 1972.

Our guided tour has a wide range of prices depending on the age of the participants. Adults (over 15 years of age) will have to pay 23 euros per person, young people between 8 and 15 years of age will only cost 6 euros, while children under 8 years of age get in free of charge. We have a specialised guide who will explain everything you need to know. At the latest you can make your reservation the day before before 19:00 hours (07:00 p.m.).
