Cordobaย is an impressive city that deserves all the time in the world, but if you are on a tight schedule, we are going to give you a list ofย what to see in Cรณrdoba – Spain in one day.
En este post podrás leer:
But first, breakfast
Don Pepe, close toย Las Tendillasย square in the city center, is the perfect place to start the day. You can opt for aย chocolate con churrosย – also known asย โporrasโ or โjeringosโย in Andalusia – a sweet and traditional Spanish breakfast, or maybe a coffee and a couple ofย toasted bread slicesย withย olive oil andย jamรณn serranoย orย zurrapaย ย (a typically Andalusian spreadable made ofย lomo, or loin of Iberian pork, fried to a mush in pork fat, flavoured with herbs and spices and coloured withย pimentรณn).
Discovering town
After this energizing breakfast, itโs time to start discoveringย all the wonders thatย Cordobaย has to offer.
The Mosque-Cathedral
If thereโs an iconic monumentย that you must see in Cordoba,ย it has to be itsย impressive Mosque/Cathedral, which is consideredย one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architectureย and boasts a special peculiarity: aย Christian Cathedralย (hence the Mosque-Cathedral name)ย was built right in the middle of it inย the 16th Century. Donโt forget to spend some time strolling around the adjacentย Patio de los Naranjosย under the shadow of its orange, palm and cypress trees.
Calleja del Paรฑuelo
Calleja del Paรฑueloย (The Alley of the Handkerchief)ย just next to the Mosque, also deserves a visit. Thisย Moorish style alley’sย most remarkable feature is that at its narrowest point it isย no wider than a lady’s handkerchief. Right at the end, there is a tinyย squareย – considered by some as theย smallestย in the worldย – containing aย small fountainย and an aromatic orange tree, pretty quaint and charming.
A tasty lunch
After a few hours of walking through town, itโs time to charge the batteries with a fulfilling lunch. Cรณrdoba has a rich and very varied gastronomic offer, but we recommend trying one of its mostย typical tabernas.ย You canโt leave without tasting theย local delicaciesย such asย salmorejo,ย ajoblanco,ย flamenquรญn,ย berenjenas fritasย orย rabo de toro. Try these and other typical tapas in one of these places and you wonโt regret it:ย Taberna San Cristรณbal,ย Casa Pepe la Juderรญa,ย Taberna Luqueย orย La Bodega.
A bit more sightseeing
La Juderรญa
Walking along the narrow and charming streets ofย La Juderรญaย (the Jewish Quarter), at the North-East of the Mosque, with no specific destination, can also be a memorable experience. Theย Sinagogaย (Sinagogue), theย Zoo Municipalย (Municipal Zoo) and theย Museo Taurinoย (Bullfighting Museum) are located there.
Casa Palacio de Viana / Patios
Visitingย Casa Palacio de Vianaย and walking around its beautifulย twelve patiosย is a true delight for the eyes and the soul. But if those twelve were not enough, the center of Cordoba is populated with them and they are all worth checking, just make sure not to miss theย Callejรณn de las Flores.
Puente Romano
Donโt forget to cross theย Puente Romano, a spectacular bridge built by the Romans 20 centuries ago overlooking the Guadalquivir river. Itโs a pretty impressive view! Oh, and if you are a Game of Thrones fan you would like to know that this bridge appears on the show as part of the city of Volantis.
At the end of the bridge, you will find theย Torre de la Calahorra,ย a Muslim fortress built to protect the bridge.ย It currently hosts theย Museo Vivo de al-Andalus, a city History Museum.
Alcรกzar de los Reyes Cristianos
In the same area, you can visit theย Alcรกzar de losย Reyes Cristianosย or theย Castle of the Christian Kings,ย anotherย architectural landmarkย of the city. In the 14th century, the Catholic king Alfonso XI ordered the construction of thisย Mudejar -styleย royal palaceย among the ruins of a vast Moorish fort. The gardens with lush trees surrounding elegant fountains and ponds are equally spectacular.
If you managed to follow this list there’s no doubt you would have made the most of yourย day in Cordoba!
