Travelling with my dog to Málaga

Many people today have pets in their homes. These little ones are our best friends and are already part of the family, and that shouldn’t change when we travel. It is a joy to know that nowadays there are many public places that let animals in and, therefore, it is much easier to take them on a trip with us.

Málaga is one of the most visited cities in Spain and attracts people from all over for different reasons. When someone thinks of this city, they think of the Costa del Sol, the beaches, the sun, Marbella and the fun – and that’s not all! The historical centre of Málaga is worth visiting, all its streets are pedestrianised, providing more comfort for you and your pet. The most interesting thing of all is that Málaga is one of the best cities in Spain to travel with pets, already in 2017 was established an ordinance of the City Council of Málaga in favour of Animal Welfare and Protection. This made the city much more pet-friendly, something we all like, as this way we don’t have to separate ourselves from our best four-legged friends.

Pet-friendly hotels

There are many pet-friendly hotels in Málaga. However, there may be limitations on the weight of the animal and, in addition, its stay in the hotel may or may not be free. It is advisable to call before booking to ask any questions; better safe than sorry! In addition, we want our pets to be as comfortable as we are. We will recommend some of the best places for your stay with your best friend.

What transports are allowed?

It is very important to consider which transports you can use with your pet. But it is equally or more important to know how you have to transport them. Many means of transport suggest some tricks or demand certain steps, and it is important to comply with them for the good of our animal.

Before travelling, we should prepare our pet by getting it used to being indoors or inside a carrier. But avoid forcing your friend; if you see that he is not used to it, look for another way that is more comfortable for him. Also make sure that your pet has all its vaccinations up to date and that you always carry its passport with you, as this will avoid possible problems.

In Málaga dogs can travel on public transport, but you should be aware of some exceptions:

  • Bus: you must take your dogs in a carrier when you use the bus.
  • Underground: only small dogs are allowed on this means of transport.
  • Suburban train: domestic animals such as dogs, cats or birds are allowed. If your pet is a dog, it must be kept on a leash and, if necessary, muzzled. In addition, you will not be charged a second ticket for your pet.
  • Taxis: dogs are allowed, but don’t forget to tell them when you order a taxi.

Things to do with your pet in Málaga

There are more and more places you can go with your pet. Some people expressly forbid it, but Málaga is a pet-friendly city and few places force you to separate from your friend. If you are one of those who defend the “not without my dog”, you will be very happy with all the information we are going to give you.

Where to buy with your pet?

Dogs have access to most restaurants, shops and bars. The only thing you cannot do is take them to the supermarket. However, if you want them to enjoy an afternoon of shopping with you, they can accompany you to the pier or the shopping centre.

There are plenty of places to eat or drink without worrying about whether your dog can get in or not. Some of them are the Restaurante La Viborilla (Carretera de Cádiz, km. 218), the Brunchit (Carretería street, 46) or the Bar Anchoita (Plaza del Teatro square, 3).Where to buy with your pet in Malaga?

What can you visit?

There are a lot of things you can do and visit in Málaga with your dog. But let’s be honest, what interests us most are the beaches. To make you even happier, we have to tell you that there are a lot of beaches where you can take your best friend. But only go to beaches that are suitable for dogs: that way you won’t have to worry about fines and, moreover, you and your dog will be much more comfortable.

Some of these beaches are:

  • Castillo Sohail beach in Fuengirola.
  • Canine beach of Torre del Mar.
  • Canine beach of Torrox
  • Benalcan, in Benalmádena

Surely after so many days on the beach you will feel tired and want to change. As we already thought about that, we have decided to recommend you some dog parks where you can relax and play with your pet. Some of them are El Morlaco Park, San Miguel Park, Concepcion Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico de la Concepción), the dog park in Jose Orbaneja Street or the dog park “Guau Guau”, among others.

You can also go on routes through the El Chorro natural park, where your pet can refresh itself without having to go to the beach, or through the Refugio de Juanar, the perfect place to enjoy nature with our companion.
