The Soho neighborhood of Malaga is one of the most emblematic neighborhoods of the city. Not only for the corners that it has, which will leave you surprised with every walk you do for the rejuvenation it had in its day.

This neighborhood we are talking about was an abandoned area of the city and therefore was not at the time very advisable to live or visit. Nowadays, it responds to the name of “Barrio de las Artes”.

This famous neighborhood runs between the Muelle Heredia and the main Alameda, resurging like the phoenix has become an area of fun and entertainment, where things are always happening. And mostly positive. This neighborhood has a famous slogan and it is totally forbidden to get bored!

Thanks to the city council of Malaga and the project MAUS (Malaga Arte Urbano Soho) in 2003 put the clear objective in converting the streets of Soho in wonderful working canvases, where all kinds of artists and some of them very acclaimed by the public come from different parts of the world to capture their art.

This picturesque place will give you options of all kinds, trying to make your visit unforgettable. Thanks to the collaboration of public entities, small and medium companies and very peculiar artists in this neighborhood you can do things that will not let you get bored and that will make you want to come back to this place again and again.

The Center of Contemporary Art of Málaga

Known as the CAC (Contemporary Art Center of Malaga) will be the best starting point to start enjoying.

Located on the edge of the neighborhood next to the famous Guadalmedina River. This building has its base in the old Wholesale Market that was projected in 1927 by the famous Luis Gutierrez de Soto.

This center has been designed and created so that everyone can enjoy it, so it has a completely free entrance.

You will discover inside it famous exhibits and exhibitions that are kept throughout the year. It also has activities for all audiences, including the youngest, so that the little ones can approach art in a dynamic and fun way.

In the Streets 

In the streets of the neighborhood you can see the creations of D*Face and Obey, and all kinds of artists who wish to capture their work with a minimum of sense. It is intended that these works that are displayed in a magical way sharpen our senses to see them and feel them and invite us to reflect in some way.

The famous Italian graffiti artist TV-Boy has been one of the last to capture his art on the walls of Soho.

TV-Boy tried to immortalize in March 2019 famous actors who are related to the Malaga film festival. In the streets you will find renowned actors such as Antonio Banderas, Dani Rovira, Chiquito de la Calzada or the famous actress Marisol.  All these characters have their roots in the city of Malaga so they are painted and captured on the graffiti “Malaga Loves Art” and next to them you can read many reflections and very significant and symbolic inscriptions.

In Casa de Campos street, which is a pedestrian and main street in Soho, you can see the graffiti of a giant chameleon in front of the famous restaurant “El Imperdible”. This famous chameleon is the work of ROA, a famous Belgian artist who has murals exhibited in five continents and impress as soon as you look at them for their subliminal messages.

As you can see, you have no option to get bored. Every step you take you will be surrounded by art.

Unique Stores with Charm 

In addition, art is everywhere, even in the stores of this neighborhood, which are known for the charm they exude and the uniqueness that characterizes them.

You will have the option to visit the famous store “Urban Bycicles”, a small store where you can rent and buy bicycles, as well as articles and complements of completely urban use.

You will also find the famous “Comic Stores”, with objects from all continents and where manga lovers will find a good collection of Japanese manga, also has wonderful objects related to superheroes.

Do you know the famous Mariquita Perez dolls? In Soho you will find a store called “MAI MAI” where you can buy them or see them if you wish. In this store they also sell women’s clothing.

A perfect complement to this place is that you can get tickets to see a play in the famous and recently inaugurated Soho CaixaBank Theater.

During the last few years Soho has become a paradise in every sense of the word, not only for its art but also for the places to eat.

  • Cayetana Restaurant located next to the beautiful mural already mentioned by ROA. This place is run by the acclaimed chef Ignacio Carmona. Among its famous and daring dishes are some of the most famous ones such as the Russian salad or the tuna and butterfish poke.
  • Taberna La Antigua located on Trinidad Grund Street. This place is created for the most traditional and you will find varied dishes such as fried food of the house or pil-pil prawns, for example.
  • For those with a sweet tooth, we recommend Santa Canela, where you will appreciate a tasty coffee and delicious cakes.
