The Baths of the Caliphate Alcazar

Located in the Campo de los Santos Mártires, Arab baths were discovered in 1903, but were finally buried. Between 1961 and 1964 they were brought to light again, possibly belonging to the old Umayyad Alcazar of the time.

History of the Baths of the Caliphate Alcazar

These hammams were an important part of the routine of Muslim life, constituting a social ritual for them. Al-Hakem II ordered the construction of this building, made of ashlar walls. The vaulted ceilings are decorated with the characteristic stars that allow light to pass through. In addition to the marble columns that support the capitals on which the ultra-semicircular arches rest.

The Almoravids and Almohads reused this building between the 11th and 13th centuries. They endowed them with carved ataurique plasterwork and epigraphic bands that can be seen today in the museum.
