The Huerta de San Vicente was Federico García Lorca‘s summer family residence. The old barn has been transformed into a valuable place, an exhibition room for the author’s photographs, publications and manuscripts. Its rooms reflect part of his life, of his youth in the decoration and furniture. A place where you can discover the experiences, stories and life reflected in a house-museum, not to be missed if you visit Granada.
Like others in any village in Granada, it was a typical farmhouse, built in 1880, when his father married his first wife, Matilde Palacios. Federico García Lorca was born on 5 June 1898 and spent his early years in this house, which influenced his works.
In 1982, the house was acquired by the Diputación de Granada and the constitution of the Patronato Federico García Lorca, to start a project that would end on the 29th of July 1986, date on which it was opened to the public as a museum, on the 50th anniversary of his execution. This was the first time that a museum was created for one of the most important figures of the 20th century.
Thanks to the support of relatives and institutions, this journey begins. The function of this house-museum was to convert the house into a museum space and ensure that visitors leave enriched by his first living space and keep his memory alive, inciting the emotion of remembrance. Showing a brief and intense journey through time.
A few years later, in 1998, the Patronato Cultural FGL, continued the work started twenty years ago, creating the Centro de Estudios Lorquiano, a place where a programme of activities is carried out for researchers and students of his life and work.
Today the house has kept its original structure. It has been adapted and divided into two parts; the museum and the rooms.
The rooms include the entrance hall, the dining room, the piano room, the kitchen, the bedroom and the courtyard, where the original furniture and furnishings can be found. Highlights include the piano, the gramophone, the desk, a drawing by Dalí and decorations painted by Hermenelgildo Lanz, as well as other pieces related to Lorca. During the visit, a walk through these intimate spaces helps us to understand the feelings he wanted to transmit to us.
The exhibition hall is spread over three rooms. Temporary exhibitions are held here, as well as a permanent exhibition, where there is a collection of family and personal memorabilia, drawings, manuscripts, photographs, letters, etc. from the García Lorca Foundation.
On the other hand, in the caretakers’ house are the offices of the Patronato Municipal Huerta de San Vicente, as well as a shop, toilets and customer service.
