The Arab Baths of Ronda

This hammam is considered one of the best preserved in Spain. Located next to the Arab Bridge and next to the Arrabal bajo, the old district of San Miguel, they were built in what used to be the Andalusian medina of the city.

History of the Palace of the Arab Baths

They were built next to a stream known as ‘de las Culebras’ in order to have easy access to the water supply. They were built between the 13th and 14th centuries and are divided into three parts according to the Roman structure: the cold, warm and hot bathing rooms. There is also a boiler room, as well as the reception area. Its hydraulic system is practically intact today.

The largest space corresponds to the central room, separated into three by horseshoe arches supported by columns made of brick and stone, ending with barrel vaults and cupolas on pendentives with the characteristic stars that let the light pass through them.

Its use ended once the Castilian conquest of Ronda was over, but the aqueduct, the waterwheel, the boiler area, the tanneries… Moreover, remains belonging to the latrines and the stairs leading to the bath reception area were later discovered. A video of the latter area can be seen in the museum explaining how the bathing area functioned at the time.
