Belalcázar is a hidden jewel of Cordoba, a town with a lot of monuments and history worth visiting and getting to know. Belalcazar is not only famous for its castle, but for its convent, church, hermitage etc.
In Belalcazar we can find the castle of Madroñiz. This castle is not the most famous in Belalcazar but it is a castle with a great history, cultural and architectural value. The castle was built by the Arabs in the eleventh and twelfth centuries and was used more for residential purposes than war, although initially it was built to be a defensive compound.
Some of the parts of this castle are restored and adapted to be inhabited occasionally.
On the other hand, you can also visit the convent of Santa Clara de la Columna. This convent maintains the Gothic buildings of the time of the Catholic kings. Ideal place and building to visit and enjoy the architecture with history presented by this wonderful site.
Of course, we can also find churches of a historical nature such as the Parish Church of Santiago el Mayor. It is a church with a large space to allow a better audition. It has wonderful side chapels housed in the buttresses giving a broad image of the church.
But undoubtedly the most famous and particular thing that Belalcazar has is the castle of Sotomayor Zuñiga. This Castle is not only one of the most important in Belalcazar; it is also one of the most important in the province of Córdoba. This castle has an excellent granite stonework and has a tight line of modillions both in the wall and in the tower.
About the tower, its height is remarkable since it is 47 meters high. All this architectural ensemble will leave you speechless and amazed; definitely a place to visit.
Belalcazar has many other impressive monuments, as well as typical parties that will leave the tourist with a very good taste. This is why, despite being a town, your visit is highly recommended, since Belalcazar has much more to offer than some big cities.
