This recognition of Medina Azahara became the fourth world mention for the city of Cรณrdoba, positioning โthe city of the three culturesโ in a privilege position regarding to a cultural and a historical legacy.

Medina Azahara declared world heritage by the UNESCO:
Medina Azahara is an old caliphate city which nowadays can be visited as an archaeological site where you can feel how is the heritage created more than a thousand years ago; that legacy is mixed with the present to offer us a monumental place which is telling the life and the culture of a great civilisation.
That is why the UNESCO decided to give the mention of world heritage to increase the list of historical treasures of the city of light, flowers and bulls.
What is the city of Medina Azahara?ย It is an archaeological city that was built in the tenth century by the Umayyad dynasty, being this elected as the epicentre of the caliphate of Cรณrdoba.
During the short period since the city was raise until its destruction, Medina Azahara became as the cultural and economical centre, favouring a lot of agreements between different civilisations who where living in the southern part of the peninsula in that time.
A wonderful place that was buried during almost a thousand years until its discovering in the middle of the twentieth century.
An important discovery that nowadays remember us the past, the present and maybe also the future of a monumental place that symbolise the peaceful coexistence between the oriental and the occidental world.
Parts of the archaeological site:
The archaeological site is conformed by the remains of the old city, so along this walk you will find the streets, the private house, the house of Yafar, the great main arcade, the mosque or the high caliphal building.
An amazing walk full of beautiful arches and gates decorated in a mudejar style carved with different Arabs motifs representing vegetation and geometrical meanings.

– It was build in the tenth century by Abderraman III Al-Nasir.
– Why was it built? Because of a representation of his power in Al – andalus.
– It is preserving a caliphal style and the typology is city palace.
– What was it used for? As a residential place for the Caliph and political seat.
– Medina Azahara means โthe shinning cityโ.
– A legend tell us that it was built by the Caliph to his favourite concubine Azahara…but this is only a legend because the archaeologists are not supporting this theory.
– The place that has been excavated is just a third part of the total city.
How to visit Medina Azahara:
Nowadays, and more than ever after the mention, is possible to visit Medina Azahara to enjoy about a part of our history as an archeological treasure.
Where can you find it? Medina Azahara is found outside Cรณrdoba, in the 5.5 kilometre point at Palma Del Rรญo road. The ticket entrance for citizens and residents in the European community is free.
To go there you will find a daily bus from Cรณrdoba, and the ticket price is 9 euros per person.
As you can see Cรณrdoba is history, art and nowadays more than ever, Cรณrdoba is a cultural representation of world heritage.
