Mijas Donkey Taxis

Mijas is one of the most charming white Andalusian villages. It is located in the heart of the Costa del Sol and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Andalusia.

This beauty is due to the fact that Mijas is nestled in the mountains and because of the whitewashed houses in the village with their colourful flower pots, narrow cobbled streets and the green of the pine trees, we can enjoy the beautiful scenery. This village has spectacular viewpoints and is only 30 km from Malaga.

In Mijas, in addition to its beautiful viewpoints, we can find the beautiful Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 16th century on the remains of an old Arab mosque. The castle walls where we can enjoy its gardens, and its bullring, which due to its oval shape, built in 1900, could be considered unique in Spain.

What are the Mijas donkey taxis?

Now that you know a little more about Mijas, we must tell you what the best way to visit it is.

The donkey taxis, as you can hear, are the main protagonists of this town. The donkey taxis, as the name suggests, are basically comfortable carriages that are pulled by donkeys. This idea came about due to tourists from other countries who, on seeing the farmers working with their donkeys during the 1960s, asked to be photographed or take a ride on them. And from this anecdote this business was born, thus helping the local economy and the farmers themselves.

What are the opening hours?

This experience is available every day of the week that is to say from Monday to Sunday, being in winter the timetable from 9:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the afternoon. However, the best time to do this experience is from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and just after lunch, as during these hours the sun is hotter and as the village is located in the mountains, it will have a positive influence on the enjoyment of the walk.

During the summer, as the days are longer and hotter, the timetable will be from 10:00 in the morning to 21:00 at night. But as a recommendation, as in winter, the perfect timetable is from 10am to 12 noon and from 7pm to 9pm, as in Mijas, as in the whole province of Malaga, the summers are very hot, but during these hours we can enjoy the coolness of the mountains more.

Where to find them?

As we have already mentioned, the donkey taxis make Mijas even better known than it already was for its own beauty, and this popular activity has been going on since the 60s. For this reason, they are now an institution, and the Mijas Town Hall has built a special car park adapted for the 60 donkey taxis and 8 horse-drawn carriages, which are nowadays Mijas’ means of tourist transport par excellence.

This car park can be found in the Avenida Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas.
