The first and most representative feature of Sierra Nevada is its ski resort. This is the resort where you can enjoy the most days of sunshine a year, and it is an ideal place to practice all snow sports.
It has an enviable quality of facilities and services, as well as being internationally renowned, as this resort has had and still has numerous ski competitions that are very famous all over the world.
During the day, you can enjoy the enormous variety of sports and snow activities that this resort has, however, it is at night when the ski resort stands out the most. Activities such as night skiing, tapas and drinks next to the slopes, concerts, restaurants or discotheques, among many other things, are the possible options you have to have an incredible experience.
There are also schools to teach you how to ski or perfect your technique, and you can rent equipment. If you have a physical disability, there is even a practical guide for skiers.
One of the most interesting and not very well known activities is horse riding. The company that manages the Sierra Nevada ski resort, Cetursa, offers in summer a horse riding route to the Las Yeguas lagoon, the source of the river Dílar. To do it, you need to make a reservation in advance.
The duration of the route is about two hours including return trip and the good thing about this route is that both beginners who have never been on horseback and more experienced riders can do it, as it is a quiet route where the traveller does not need to be an expert rider. However, something that is required is a suitable equipment for the altitude of the mountains, sun protection and the complicity of at least one companion.
Firstly, the start of this route is from La Hoya de la Mora and from there you ride up through the ski slopes (the route is done when there is no snow) to the area of Borreguiles del Monachil. The horses go at a leisurely pace, walking at a leisurely pace.
The route ends at the source of the river Dílar. Here is the Laguna de las Yeguas and the so-called Lagunillos de la Virgen.
Do you like to feel the adrenaline of heights and have the sensation that you can touch flying birds? If you are afraid of heights this is certainly not the activity for you, but for people who love to feel like you are flying this is ideal.
The excellent conditions in the province of Granada make it one of the best destinations for hang gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. Taking off from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada at an altitude of 1300 metres to land in the numerous flying areas of the Costa Tropical such as La Herradura or Peña Escrita is an indescribable sensation.
This flying experience and adventure lasts around 10 to 20 minutes and you will be accompanied by certified and multilingual pilots, providing you with the necessary equipment to make the paragliding flight. In addition, transfer from the centre of Granada is offered.
In the Sierra Nevada ski resort itself, there is a specific area for those who do not want to ski and want to enjoy other activities. It is an area especially for children to enjoy and feel at ease, so having fun in this area with the family is quite easy. This area is called Mirlo Blanco, and it is a modern recreational park with snow activities for the whole family to enjoy without the need to put on skis.
In this area you will find ice rinks, two snow slides, bike-skiing and many other fun activities. However, the main attraction in this area is the Russian Sledge, which is a roller coaster on the snow with fabulous views and scenery.
Regarding opening hours, most activities are from 10am to 4:30pm, although the Russian Sledge is from 10am to 5:15pm.
A very curious place that will appeal to lovers of gastronomy, and in particular ham lovers, is the ham drying room El Mirador. This drying room is an artisan family business that was inaugurated in 1994, and they took advantage of the cold of Sierra Nevada to start salting hams in the traditional way as it was done in the old days.
In this place they have a very famous black pudding of “Güéjar Sierra” which is made from cooked onion, blood and mortar, all spiced. This black pudding is made using the traditional methods and taste that comes from the drying room, all naturally cured. In addition to the black pudding, they also have high quality products such as reserve ham, Iberian ham, Iberian bacon and Iberian pork loin.
Being able to visit this dryer can be an incredible experience that is not very common, so if you want to experience this different sensation and you are a lover of Iberian products, do not hesitate to visit this place.
