Cadiz’s cuisine has shown in recent years that it is not just about fried fish. More and more restaurants and bars are offering a vegan and vegetarian menu to this new and growing public. The sunny fields in Cadiz provide vegetables rich in vitamins, which results in succulent and new vegetarian and vegan dishes that will leave you wanting to repeat. La Veganesa
La Veganesa started out as a small take-away stall in the Central Market of Cadiz that smelled of curry, turmeric, pepper… After a few years, it moved to the Barrio del Pópulo, the oldest neighbourhood in the city with a baroque style and period cobblestones, so it is even more surprising to see a vegan restaurant in a setting like that. However, La Veganesa has managed to attract an increasingly large and loyal clientele. They serve tasty vegan food, with very good presentation and seasoning. They have Mexican dishes, such as burritos and nachos, other more Spanish dishes, such as the potato omelette, and even impressive snack cakes. Our recommendations are the broccoli cake in a bed of veso (vegan cheese), the typical tapas (salmorejo, meatballs, tortilla…) and the seaweed fritters. It’s all incredible!
Arsenio Manila Restaurant
The Arsenio Manila Restaurant, located on the seafront, is a modern and original restaurant that offers dishes made only with products from our land. It also has a selection of vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian and ovo vegetarian dishes and as they say in their menu, they give the possibility to adapt the dishes and substitute animal protein. Try the oriental garlic shitake wok, the pea croquetas or the thai stew, made with potato and pea meatballs and lentil and chilli thai cream. If you like Mexican food, don’t hesitate to try the spelt pancakes with guacamole, mushrooms and cheese and the guacamole made on the spot.
If you are a vegetable lover, you will fall in love with the zucchini noodles with cauliflower and sage chips sauce and the green gazpacho made with green peppers, apple, guacamole, cucumber and herbs. If you’re one of those who always says yes to sweets, you’ll find the dessert menu even better: homemade carrot cake, steamed strawberries and grated lime or white chocolate soup. We’re getting hungry already! And as if that weren’t enough, from the terrace you can contemplate the magnificent views of Cadiz. What more could you ask for?
San Wich
If you want to try the best vegan burgers in Cadiz, go to the San Wich restaurant on Calle Nueva. They have seven different alternatives, five with an aubergine base, one with quinoa and another with lentils and mushrooms. All their ingredients, including bacon and cheese, are made with vegetable ingredients.
Candelaria Restaurant
The Candelaria Restaurant, located in Plaza Candelaria, belongs to a couple from Milan who have brought Italian cuisine to the centre of our “Little Silver Cup” (how Cadiz is known). They make fresh pasta and homemade pizza, as well as a variety of starters and other dishes. On their menu there is an offer of vegetarian dishes, such as the caprese salad, made with buffalo mozzarella, natural and roasted tomatoes and basil. For a vegan option we recommend you try some of the pizzas with vegetables and the salad with burrata, roasted aubergines and lamb’s lettuce.
La Candela Restaurant
La Candela, located on Feduchy Street, will make you fall in love as soon as you walk in. It’s a small and cozy place, with a colorful and cute decoration. Its tapas are different and innovative and its vegan dishes will not disappoint you. Try the vegetables at low temperature with walnut pesto, a hearty dish with a good cooking of the vegetables and also forms the perfect combination. Another of our favourites is strawberry salmorejo with cream cheese and liquorice, it will be a totally new flavour explosion for your palate!
La Isleta de la Viña
La Isleta de la Viña is located on Corralón de los Carros street and, although it is not a completely vegan restaurant, it has many vegetarian and vegan options that will surprise you. Try their vegan burgers and vegetable dishes, our favorite is the al dente vegetable on cauliflower cream with olive soil and coffee, you haven’t tried anything like it!
