Description

Discover the pantheon of the Catholic Monarchs

If you visit Granada you cannot miss one of the most emblematic and historic monuments of the city, its Cathedral. Built on the site of an ancient mosque, the Catholic Monarchs decided to erect what was to be an imposing work of art, and during its construction complications kept arising that would prolong its inauguration until the beginning of the 18th century.

With this visit, you will discover one of the most outstanding constructions of the Renaissance period, as it is the first Renaissance church in Spain due to its long construction process. Although it initially began following Gothic traces, Renaissance influences soon followed, and although it was completed during the predominance of the Baroque period.

The importance of this cathedral can be seen in the influences that have emerged from it in other churches throughout the country. It is undoubtedly an obligatory stop in this monument, where you will find outstanding rooms such as the Royal Chapel, where the remains of the Catholic Monarchs are buried and a long history that is worth discovering, as it symbolises the death of a whole era that saw the birth of a new era. Its location reveals the importance that the city of Granada had for Isabella and Ferdinand. It is here that the unification of the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula culminated, initiating the integration of the modern state of Spain.

You can discover an imposing façade ornamented with plant and geometric motifs and its sixteen bells of different origins, which hide a whole history with the Cathedral’s neighbours. Inside, you will find a whole series of treasures from the history of Spain, Classicist elements such as the columns and their capitals, the Plateresque choir stalls and the Chapter House and the fifteen chapels that reflect the changing artistic trends.
