Mijas Pueblo

This beautiful municipality in the province of Malaga located in the Comarca del Sol Occidental consists of 3 urban centers: Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas and La Cala de Mijas.

What to see in Mijas?

Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mijas

Museum open to the public that exhibits the customs of the Mijeños, as well as a traditional house, bakery and wine cellar, oil mill, etc.. In addition, there are also temporary exhibitions of photography and painting. An interesting visit for only 1 euro.

Constitution Square

Open air and free access, this square is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the municipality. The fountain surrounded by palm trees and plants will give you beautiful views while you sit on one of its benches to rest for a while.

The Fortress

Dating back to the Middle Ages, only the remains of a tower and some walls are still standing. The entrance is free and you can also visit the Wall, the Mirador and the Gardens of the old town.

Hermitage of the Virgin of La Peña

Located in the Paseo del Compás, this hermitage, of free access, was built in 1548 when the friars excavated the temple in rock. Here the patron saint of Mijas is venerated. A beautiful place that is not far from the Mirador del Compás, if you want to take a look at the beautiful views of the village with the Mediterranean in the background.

Bullring

With almost 100 years old, this square is very peculiar due to its rectangular bullring. Today, it houses the Bullfighting Museum of the Municipality, which has a private collection. The entrance fee is 4 euros per person. Open every day except Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 am to 5 pm, except on weekends when they close at 2 pm.

What to do in Mijas?

Street markets

These markets are quite famous and not only among residents, but they are also very attractive for tourists. Mijas has a great variety of street markets located in different points and offering many products such as: clothes, shoes, table linen, handicrafts and ceramics; as well as fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, flowers and flowerpots, etc. The opening hours of the markets are from 9 am to 2 pm, so it is a fun and entertaining option to have a good morning while shopping for local products.

Donkey-taxi

Being the main attraction of the municipality, the rides on the back of the donkey-taxi could not be missing. This activity arose from the workers’ custom of returning home on donkeys, and became popular when tourists asked them to take a ride on the animal. In fact, the tips they received from tourists were sometimes higher than their salaries.

The price nowadays is 15 euros/person or 20 euros/two people, and the duration of the tour is 15/20 minutes. If at the end you get attached to your donkey-taxi, you can take a picture with the donkey for the price of 2 euros. In winter, they are available from 9h-18h and in summer from 10h-21h.

Enjoy every Wednesday at 12:00h a free flamenco show in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña (Mijas Pueblo). Parking costs 1 euro per 24h.

How to get there?

Mijas can be reached from several points. If you come from Malaga through the Autovía del Sol, you only have to enter Fuengirola and then take the A-387 towards Mijas. If you come from Marbella, drive along the A-7 and take the A-387 towards Mijas. From Benalmádena Pueblo, just take the A-368 towards Mijas. There are also different bus lines that take you to the village such as: line 122 Fuengirola – Mijas Pueblo, line 112 Málaga – Mijas Pueblo and line 121 Torremolinos – Mijas Pueblo.
